Security Operations Center (SOC)

A security operations center is supposed to be the place where someone is actually watching, correlating what the logs and alerts are saying, and acting fast when something looks wrong. In practice, a lot of SOCs, in-house and outsourced alike, turn into an alert-forwarding service: a dashboard full of red flags that nobody has the context or authority to act on, and an analyst whose job has quietly become triaging noise instead of catching real threats.

The question I ask before anything else is whether you actually need a 24/7 SOC, or whether you need better detection and a faster response process without the overhead of staffing a room around the clock. For a lot of mid-sized organizations, a well-tuned MSSP relationship combined with clear internal escalation does more good than a half-staffed in-house SOC that can't cover nights and weekends anyway.

What I help with

If you're building one, I help design what actually gets monitored, endpoint, network, identity, cloud, and how those signals get correlated so an analyst sees a pattern instead of fifty disconnected alerts. If you're evaluating an outsourced SOC or MSSP, I look at their detection coverage, their actual response times against what's in the contract, and whether their escalation process matches how your team wants to be woken up at 2am, because that detail matters more than people expect. If you already have a SOC and it's drowning in false positives, I work on tuning detection rules and alert logic so analysts are spending their time on things that matter.

I also care a lot about the handoff between detection and response. A SOC that spots something at 3am is only useful if there's a clear, pre-agreed path for who gets called and what authority they have to act, isolate a system, disable an account, before waiting for someone to wake up and approve it.

Who this is for

If you're deciding between building, buying, or going hybrid on SOC capability, if your current monitoring generates more noise than confidence, or if you need an outside read on whether your MSSP's SOC is actually earning what you're paying for it, let's talk.
