NIST SP 800-53

NIST SP 800-53 is the master catalog of security and privacy controls behind most U.S. federal information security — the foundation underneath FISMA, FedRAMP, and the Risk Management Framework (RMF). It's exhaustive by design, organized into control families covering everything from access control and audit logging to incident response, supply chain risk, and physical security, with baselines (Low, Moderate, High) that scale the control set to how sensitive the system actually is.

If you're a federal agency, you're implementing this because you have to. If you're a contractor or cloud service provider trying to get a system authorized to operate on a federal network — through an Authority to Operate (ATO) or a FedRAMP authorization — you're implementing it because nobody will let your system connect without it. Either way, 800-53 is dense, and the gap between "we read the control" and "we have evidence an assessor will accept" is usually where projects stall.

Where the real work is

Selecting the right baseline for your system's actual impact level matters more than people expect — overshoot it and you're building controls you didn't need; undershoot it and an assessor sends you back to start. From there, the work is less about inventing new security capability and more about implementing controls correctly, tailoring them sensibly to your environment, and — critically — generating the evidence and documentation an assessor or Authorizing Official actually needs to see, in the format RMF or FedRAMP expects.

How I'd approach it

I'd start with your system's categorization and confirm the baseline is right before anything else, because that decision shapes the whole project. Then a control-by-control implementation review: what's genuinely in place, what's partially there, and what's missing — paired with a System Security Plan that documents it honestly and a remediation plan ordered by risk and by what actually blocks authorization. If you're heading toward an ATO or FedRAMP authorization, I'll help you get the package into shape before it's in front of an assessor, not after it bounces back.

If you're navigating 800-53 toward an ATO, FedRAMP authorization, or ongoing RMF obligations, reach out and let's talk about where your system actually stands.
