Mobile Security Solutions

Mobile devices sit in an awkward spot in most security programs. They hold company email, chat apps, sometimes direct access to business systems, and they're often personally owned, which means you can't manage them the way you'd manage a corporate laptop. A lot of organizations respond to that tension by just not addressing it, hoping the exposure stays small. It doesn't stay small, it's usually already larger than people realize.

The risk isn't exotic. It's a lost or stolen phone with an unlocked email client, a personal device with outdated software and no screen lock connecting to company Slack, or an employee installing a sketchy app that quietly has broad permissions on a device that also has access to work resources. None of that requires a sophisticated attacker, it just requires an unmanaged device and bad luck.

How I approach mobile security

I start by figuring out what's actually realistic for your organization. If devices are company-owned, full mobile device management makes sense, enforced encryption, remote wipe, app restrictions, OS update requirements. If it's BYOD, which is most organizations, the more realistic approach is a mobile application management layer that secures company data and apps specifically, email, documents, business apps, without trying to control the whole personal device, which employees will resist and often legally can't be forced to accept.

From there it's about the basics done consistently: requiring a passcode or biometric lock as a condition of accessing company resources, enforcing app-level encryption for business data, and having a clear, fast process for remotely wiping company data off a lost or stolen device without touching someone's personal photos. I also look at what happens when someone leaves the company, because mobile access is one of the most commonly missed items in offboarding.

Who needs this

If your mobile policy is essentially "we trust people," if you don't have a way to remove company data from a lost device, or if BYOD has grown without any actual security layer behind it, it's worth closing that gap.
