Incident Response Management
Incident response management covers two different things that both matter: having a real plan before anything happens, and having someone who can actually run point when something does. A plan nobody has rehearsed is a document. Response support in the middle of an active incident is a different skill entirely, and the two need to connect cleanly, or you end up improvising at the worst possible moment.
What I've seen go wrong most often in a live incident isn't a technical failure, it's a decision-making failure: no one is clearly in charge, legal and IT are getting conflicting information, and precious hours get lost figuring out who's allowed to make the call to take a system offline. Good incident response management solves that before it happens, by building a plan with clear roles, authority, and communication paths, and solves it during the event by having someone experienced actually directing the response.
How I work with clients
Before anything happens, I help build or tighten an incident response plan that's specific to your environment: who's on the response team, what their actual authority is, how you'll communicate internally and externally, including breach notification obligations if regulated data is involved, and what your relationship with legal counsel, insurance, and forensic resources looks like before you need them, not after.
If you're in the middle of an active incident, the priority shifts to containment first, stopping the bleeding before chasing root cause, then investigation, communication, and recovery in a sequence that doesn't make things worse. I've seen organizations destroy forensic evidence by panicking and wiping systems before anyone understood what happened. Slowing down the first hour, just enough to make deliberate decisions, usually saves days later.
Who needs this
If you don't have a documented incident response plan, if the one you have has never been tested, or if you're dealing with a suspected active incident right now, this is the conversation to have immediately.
